Alice in Chains
Alice in Chains' self-titled third album, often nicknamed the Dog Album or Tripod, arrived on vinyl on 31 October 1995 through Columbia. It followed the breakthrough of Dirt (1992) after a year and a half without live shows, a silence caused by Layne Staley's heroin addiction and one that had fuelled rumours of a split. It was the first record with bassist Mike Inez and the last with Staley, who died in 2002.
Recorded in Seattle with producer Toby Wright, it deals with addiction, depression, spirituality and strained relationships, including the tension inside the band. Melody and varied textures take priority over heavy riffs, with the acoustic mood of their earlier EPs sitting alongside late-1960s and early-1970s rock touches. It entered the Billboard 200 at number one, and "Grind" and "Again" both earned Grammy nominations.
