The Eye is King Diamond's fifth studio album, following Conspiracy in 1989 and arriving on Roadrunner Records. The Danish heavy metal band released it in October 1990. Like the records before it, it is built around a major storyline, though this time the tale is told in a different way from its predecessors.

It is a record of changes in the ranks. Snowy Shaw played drums on this album and no other, while guitarist Pete Blakk and bassist Hal Patino made their last appearances here before a long gap. Patino did return for Abigail II: The Revenge. The next studio album, The Spider's Lullabye, did not appear until 1995, so The Eye closes a distinct chapter in the band's story. It is well worth hearing for fans who like their traditional heavy metal with a narrative thread.
