Lulu is a double album made by Metallica with the American singer-songwriter Lou Reed. It came out on 31 October 2011 through Warner Bros. in the United States and Vertigo elsewhere, and it was recorded in San Rafael, California, between April and June that year. The lead single, "The View", arrived on 27 September.
It is a concept record drawn from Frank Wedekind's two Lulu plays, with Reed largely speaking his poetry over Metallica's music and James Hetfield chipping in with occasional backing vocals. It sits between Death Magnetic and Hardwired… to Self-Destruct as the band's most unexpected detour, and it proved to be Reed's last full-length studio project before his death in 2013. Reviews were polarised and many fans of both acts reacted harshly, but it remains a fascinating, daring curiosity for anyone keen to hear what happens when two very different worlds collide.
