Beyond Magnetic
Beyond Magnetic is Metallica's third EP, first released on iTunes on 13 December 2011, with other formats following in 2012. It gathers four tracks that were set aside during the making of Death Magnetic, left unfinished before that album's final mixing. The sound is mostly thrash, though the songs vary in style.
It arrived alongside the band's 30th anniversary shows at The Fillmore, where one of the songs was played live each night before it became available to download. Coming soon after Lulu, it was seen by several writers as a response to that project's poor reception. Reviews were mixed to positive, with critics split over the tracks themselves. It reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 and topped the UK Rock & Metal albums chart, so it is a handy listen for anyone curious about what the Death Magnetic sessions left behind.
