David Bowie
David Bowie's debut album arrived in June 1967 on Deram, a Decca subsidiary, after a run of singles for Pye that had failed to chart. Mike Vernon produced it in London, bringing in plenty of session players, while Bowie and his former Buzz bandmate Derek Fearnley wrote out the musical charts themselves with the help of a guidebook.
This is a long way from Ziggy or Berlin. Orchestral brass and woodwind lead the songs, and the baroque pop and music hall sound owes something to Anthony Newley and to the Edwardian touches in British bands of the day. The words range from childlike innocence to drug use and totalitarianism, themes Bowie would revisit later. It earned good reviews but sold poorly, with little promotion from Deram, and he left the label after further tracks were rejected. Worth hearing as a curious, charming starting point.
