Marilyn Manson formed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989, when the singer of the same name teamed up with guitarist Daisy Berkowitz. They began as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, building a local following in South Florida through theatrical live shows. In 1993 they became the first act signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records. Early members took stage names pairing a female sex symbol's first name with a male serial killer's surname, and the singer is the only original member left.

Their sound blends industrial rock, alternative metal and industrial metal, wrapped in heavy makeup, costume and deliberately provocative performance. Start with Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998), both platinum sellers, then move on to Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) and The Golden Age of Grotesque. Their most recent studio album is One Assassination Under God, Chapter 2.
