Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)
Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) is Marilyn Manson's fourth studio album, released on 11 November 2000 through Nothing and Interscope Records. A rock opera concept album, it completes a triptych that began with Antichrist Superstar in 1996 and continued with Mechanical Animals in 1998. Manson later explained that the trilogy's story runs in reverse, so this record is where the narrative starts. Musically, it swaps the glam-tinged polish of Mechanical Animals for the industrial metal of the band's earlier work.
It was also the band's first release after the Columbine massacre, when the press wrongly claimed the killers had been influenced by the group. Manson called the album a "declaration of war" in reply. It was written in his Hollywood Hills home and recorded in places including Death Valley and Laurel Canyon. It reached number 13 in the US but became their biggest international seller, going gold in the UK among other countries. Kerrang! later named it one of the decade's best.
