Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982–2011 is a double-disc R.E.M. compilation, released on 11 November 2011 by Warner Bros. Records. The band compiled it themselves, and it was announced on the same day, 21 September 2011, that they revealed they were calling it a day. It was designed as a closing statement on their career.
What sets it apart from earlier collections is its reach. It is the first R.E.M. compilation to bring together their early independent work for I.R.S. Records and the ten studio albums they made for Warner Bros. That means the jangle-pop and college-rock beginnings sit alongside the later records in a single, band-chosen account of nearly three decades. For anyone who wants the whole arc in one place, it makes a sensible starting point or a tidy farewell.
