The Automatic Box
The Automatic Box is a four-disc set of R.E.M. rarities, issued by WEA International on 30 November 1993. It gathers mostly B-sides from the Automatic for the People era, and the fourth disc steps back to collect B-sides from the singles that followed Green, which had also appeared on the 7" vinyl box set Singleactiongreen. It belongs to a Warner Bros. series devoted to the odds and ends of a single record, alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Live Rare Remix Box.
For fans of the band, the pull is in the outtakes. "It's a Free World Baby", "Fretless", "Mandolin Strum" and "Organ Song" were all recorded during the Out of Time sessions, so the set gives a glimpse of the band's workshop between two very different records. It sits between Automatic for the People in 1992 and Monster in 1994, and is a good place to explore if you already know the albums and want the material that sat around them.
