Collapse Into Now
Collapse Into Now is R.E.M.'s fifteenth and final studio album, released on 7 March 2011 on Warner Bros. Jacknife Lee produced it, having worked with the band on Accelerate in 2008. Four singles came before it: "It Happened Today", "Mine Smell Like Honey", "Überlin" and "Oh My Heart". The band did not tour it, so none of its songs were played in concert by R.E.M., though Michael Stipe later performed "Every Day Is Yours to Win" on his own at a Tibethouse benefit.
It also works as a quiet farewell. Stipe has described the title as coming from the last song he sings, which he imagined as a message to a nine-year-old from the twentieth century, passing on its values, mistakes and triumphs. Mike Mills later pointed to "indications" in the lyrics that a split was coming, and Stipe said the band put themselves on the cover for the first time and waved goodbye, though nobody noticed.
