Fables of the Reconstruction is the third album by R.E.M., released on 10 June 1985 through I.R.S. Records. It was the first record the Americans made outside their home country, recorded at Livingston Studios in London with producer Joe Boyd. The result is darker and murkier than the two albums before it, with lyrics that wander through Southern Gothic characters and settings.

It's also a more varied record, bringing in strings, brass and banjo alongside the band's jangling guitars. Critics welcomed its folk leanings and heavy atmosphere, and it has since been seen as a bridge between the hazy mystery of their early work and the acoustic experiments of later years. It reached the US top 30 and gave the band their first UK top 40 entry. "Driver 8" is the song to start with, still one of their best-loved and most-covered early tracks.
