Green
Green is R.E.M.'s sixth studio album, released on 8 November 1988. It came after Document and was the second record the band produced with Scott Litt. The group kept political concerns in both the lyrics and the packaging, but the music itself moved in new directions. They wrote major-key rock songs, brought in instruments such as the mandolin, and on some tracks swapped the instruments they usually played.
It was a critical and commercial success, and it fed four singles: "Orange Crush", "Stand", "Pop Song 89" and "Get Up". The band took it on an 11-month world tour. For anyone who knows R.E.M. mainly through the jangling early records, Green is a good place to hear them stretching out, trying new sounds and still sounding like themselves.
