Surfer Rosa
Surfer Rosa is the first full studio album from the American alternative rock band Pixies, released on 21 March 1988 on the British independent label 4AD. Steve Albini produced it, and his experimental recording techniques help give the record its distinctive drum sound. Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico run through it, alongside darker material touching on mutilation and incest.
It missed the charts in both the US and the UK, and its only single, a rerecorded "Gigantic", reached number 93 in Britain. Yet the album's standing has grown steadily. Elektra reissued it in the US in 1992, and it went gold there in 2005. Critics regularly place it among the best rock albums, Billy Corgan and PJ Harvey have named it as an inspiration, and it shaped Nirvana's In Utero, another Albini production.
