The Story of The Clash, Volume 1
The Story of The Clash, Volume 1 is a double-disc compilation that gathers 28 tracks from the band's run of records. It came out on 21 March 1988, and the original vinyl set appeared with four cover colours: red, blue, yellow and green. Reissued singles of "I Fought the Law" and "London Calling" helped to promote it.
It makes a sensible way in to the London punk band's story, covering a good stretch of their career while leaving out anything from their final studio album, Cut the Crap (1985). That means it follows the path from The Clash in 1977 through to Combat Rock in 1982. The "Volume 1" in the title promised a follow-up of live recordings, which never appeared, though the live compilation From Here to Eternity: Live arrived in 1999.
