Album
Sandinista!
Sandinista! is the fourth studio album by the Clash, following London Calling and arriving before Combat Rock. It came out on 12 December 1980 as a triple album of 36 tracks, six to each side. The band took a cut in their royalties so that it could be sold at a low price, and for the first time the songs were credited to the group as a whole rather than to Joe Strummer and Mick Jones.
What you get is the Clash stretching well beyond punk: funk, reggae, dub, jazz, gospel, rockabilly, folk, calypso, disco and rap all turn up. Critics were largely warm, though some found the sheer length too much, and it remains their lowest-charting album in the UK. Even so, The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll named it album of the year, and in 2020 Rolling Stone placed it at number 323 on its list of the 500 greatest albums. It rewards anyone happy to wander.
