Pixies
Pixies is an EP that gathers the rest of the band's original 17-track demo tape, often called The Purple Tape. Eight of those songs had already appeared in 1987 as their debut, Come On Pilgrim, and this release collects the others. Gary Smith recorded the whole tape at Fort Apache Studios in March 1987. In reissues it also goes by Demos or Demos (The Purple Tape '87).
It sits right at the start of the Pixies story, before Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, and lets you hear the band's early songs in their raw demo form. Among them is a cover of "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)", which comes from David Lynch's 1977 film Eraserhead. Cooking Vinyl put it out in the UK and Europe in July 2002, alongside releases from SpinART in the US and Sonic Unyon in Canada.
