Songs for the Deaf
Songs for the Deaf is the third album by the American band Queens of the Stone Age, released on 27 August 2002 on Interscope Records. It follows their self-titled debut and Rated R, and it sits at a turning point in their story: it was the last of their albums to feature Nick Oliveri on bass, and the first to feature Dave Grohl on drums. Grohl returned for part of the track list on ...Like Clockwork in 2013. Plenty of guest musicians appear along the way.
It works as a loose concept album, set up as a drive through the California desert from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree, with the dial tuning into radio stations from towns such as Banning and Chino Hills. That framing gives the hard-hitting stoner and alternative rock a real sense of travel. Critics praised it, and it brought the band their first gold certification in the United States. "No One Knows", "Go with the Flow" and "First It Giveth" were all released as singles.
