Rock in Rio captures Iron Maiden on the final night of the Brave New World Tour, recorded at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil in 2001. Around 250,000 people were there, the second largest crowd of the band's career, behind their 1985 appearance at the same festival. It came soon after singer Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith had rejoined, and it was the band's fifth live release. It came out in March 2002 through EMI.

The set mixes old favourites such as "Iron Maiden" and "Run to the Hills" with six songs from Brave New World, including "The Wicker Man" and the title track. Two numbers from the Blaze Bayley years, "Sign of the Cross" and "The Clansman", also get an airing. The video version, edited by Steve Harris, adds interviews, a day-in-the-life documentary and photographs by Ross Halfin.
