Under a Billion Suns is Mudhoney's seventh studio album, released on 7 March 2006. It follows Since We've Become Translucent from 2002 and carries on the move away from straight grunge that began there, taking a more commercial direction. Three producers worked on it: Phil Ek, Johnny Sangster and Tucker Martine.

What makes it stand out in the Seattle band's catalogue is the instrumentation. Saxophones and trumpets turn up far more than you would expect on a Mudhoney record, and a few songs add female backing vocals. "Empty Shells" ended up in the video game NHL 2K7. The first few hundred copies pre-ordered from Sub Pop were signed by the band and came with a bonus CD of demos and remixes, which makes those early pressings a nice find for collectors.
