Since We've Become Translucent is Mudhoney's sixth studio album, released in 2002 on Sub Pop, the label the band had returned to. It was also the first record made after original bassist Matt Lukin left three years earlier. Guy Maddison joined on bass in 2001, though one track, "Inside Job", was cut earlier with former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer playing bass.

The sound moves away from the band's usual grunge towards something relatively accessible, with a rock feel. Then "Baby, Can You Dig the Light?" wanders into psychedelia, synthpop and jazz. Most of it was recorded across three weekends with three different producers: Johnny Sangster, Martin Feveyear and Scott Colburn. The band rehearsed and recorded three songs at a time before moving on, a method they used again on Under a Billion Suns. It is worth hearing as the point where Mudhoney stretched their style.
