Deep Cuts, Volume 1 (1973–1976) gathers lesser-known Queen tracks from the band's first five albums, rather than the hits that fill their other compilations. It came out in March 2011 as part of Queen's 40th anniversary, alongside reissues of those same five records: Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. The songs are personal favourites chosen by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters drummer.

What makes it worth hearing is the sequencing. It is the only place to find the complete endings of "The March of the Black Queen" and "Ogre Battle", which on Queen II run straight into the next tracks. "Tenement Funster", "Flick of the Wrist" and "Lily of the Valley" also flow into one another, just as they did on Sheer Heart Attack. It suits fans who want to explore beyond the singles.
