Antichrist Superstar
Antichrist Superstar is the second studio album by Marilyn Manson, released on 8 October 1996. Recorded at Nothing Studios in New Orleans, it was produced by Manson with Sean Beavan, Dave Ogilvie and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The sessions were clouded by heavy drug use and bitter arguments, and founding guitarist Daisy Berkowitz was fired partway through, making this his last appearance on a Manson record.
It is a concept album and rock opera about a demagogue who seizes power and destroys the world, framed as a critique of the Christian right and conservative politics in North America. It opens a trilogy continued by Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood. Led by "The Beautiful People", it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell more than seven million copies worldwide. Rolling Stone's Lorraine Ali credited it with ending grunge's dominance. The tour that followed drew pickets and congressional scrutiny.
