As Ugly as They Wanna Be
As Ugly as They Wanna Be is an EP by the American rock band Ugly Kid Joe, released in October 1991 on Stardog Records. The title is a joke at the expense of 2 Live Crew's 1989 album As Nasty as They Wanna Be. Musically it mixes hard rock, funk metal and heavy metal, which suits a band that never took itself too seriously.
It arrived just before the band's debut album, America's Least Wanted, in 1992, and it counts as an early chapter in their story. Roger Lahr played rhythm guitar here and on no other Ugly Kid Joe record, and Mark Davis was the drummer, going on to appear on the debut as his only full album with the group. The EP became the first to be certified multi-platinum by the RIAA, which makes it a rather bigger deal than most EPs.
