Effigy of the Forgotten
Effigy of the Forgotten is the debut full-length album from New York death metal band Suffocation, released on 8 October 1991 through R/C Records. It was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, with Scott Burns producing, and Dan Seagrave painted the cover. Several tracks are re-recorded versions of songs from the band's Reincremation demo and Human Waste EP, so it works as a first proper statement of material they had already been shaping. It is dedicated to Roger Patterson, the Atheist bassist who died in a car crash earlier that year.
The music is highly technical, with plenty of guitar solos, and George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher guests on "Mass Obilteration". Reviews were mixed at first, but opinion has shifted a good deal since. It is now regarded as one of the most influential death metal albums, a blueprint for the genre through the 1990s. Roadrunner Records later reissued it alongside Pierced from Within in the Two from the Vault series.
