Streets: A Rock Opera
Streets: A Rock Opera is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Savatage, released on 15 October 1991 through Atlantic. It follows Gutter Ballet from 1990 and tells the rise and fall of DT Jesus, a fictional musician. That makes it a full concept record, and one that sits in the progressive end of the band's metal.
The making of it was a long haul. Pre-production began in October 1990, and recording stretched across almost a year. It also marks a turning point in the band's story, as it was Jon Oliva's last album as lead vocalist until Dead Winter Dead in 1995. On that record and on 1997's The Wake of Magellan, he shared the singing with Zak Stevens, who took lead on two songs from each. Oliva then returned as sole lead vocalist on Poets and Madmen in 2001. For anyone curious about Savatage's story-driven side, this is the place to start.
