Breeding the Spawn
Breeding the Spawn is the second album by American death metal band Suffocation, released on 18 May 1993 through Roadrunner Records. It followed their 1991 debut, Effigy of the Forgotten, and pushed the sound towards more technical songwriting, with melodic touches and more varied dynamics. It was the first record with bassist Chris Richards, and the last with drummer Mike Smith until Souls to Deny in 2004.
The recording took an unplanned route. The band had hoped to work in Florida with Scott Burns, who produced the debut, but money was tight and Roadrunner's Monte Conner wanted a return to the rawness of the Human Waste EP. They ended up at Noise Lab in West Islip, New York, producing it themselves with Paul Bagin. Reviews were mixed, mostly because of the production. Roadrunner later apologised, and Burns returned for Pierced From Within, which re-recorded the title track. The band have kept revisiting these songs on later albums.
