Despise the Sun

Despise the Sun is an EP by the American death metal band Suffocation, released on 6 January 1998 on Virtue. It arrived at a turning point: it was the last recording before the band split, and the last to feature guitarist Doug Cerrito and bassist Chris Richards. Suffocation would not return until 2003.

It also closed a chapter behind the desk. Scott Burns, who had worked on Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced from Within, produced it in 1997 and then retired from the music industry. Funeral Inception opens with a sample of Kevin Spacey from the 1995 film The Usual Suspects, while the closing track, Catatonia, first appeared on the Human Waste EP. Relapse Records reissued the EP on 30 April 2002, so it is easy enough to find for anyone tracing the band's brutal, technical sound through its first era.
