Adore
Adore is the fourth studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins, released on 2 June 1998 by Virgin. It followed the multi-platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and the tour that came after it, so expectations were high. The making of it was anything but easy: Jimmy Chamberlin had left, tensions lingered within the band, and Billy Corgan was dealing with a divorce and the death of his mother. He later described it as the sound of a band falling apart.
What came out was a quieter, darker record with an electronic tinge, which Rolling Stone's Greg Kot called a complete break with the past. It divided fans and sold less than its two predecessors, but critics admired its experiments and gloomier mood, and it earned a Grammy nomination. It was also the band's first album without an official drummer. Its cult following has grown over the years, and a remastered, expanded edition appeared in 2014.
