Machina II/the friends and enemies of modern music
Machina II/the friends and enemies of modern music is the sixth studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins, and it arrived in an unusual way: it was released for free on the Internet on 5 September 2000, on the band's own Constantinople Records. It follows MACHINA/the machines of God from the same year, and the two records share a loose concept about a rock star gone mad.
The album is a double LP, packaged with three EPs of B-sides and alternate versions, with artwork by Carlos Segura. It also marks a turning point. It was the last Pumpkins studio album before the band reformed in 2006, the last with James Iha until his return in 2018, and the last with the original line-up, as bassist D'arcy Wretzky left during the sessions. A deluxe box set pairing both Machina albums finally appeared on 5 September 2025.
