ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts
ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts is the twelfth studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins, released in instalments of 11 songs each, with the first act arriving in November 2022. Two further acts followed in early 2023, making 33 songs in all. A physical box set added ten exclusive tracks under the title Zodeon at Crystal Hall.
It is billed as a sequel to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina/The Machines of God, picking up the story of Shiny, once known as Zero and later Glass, as he faces exile and the weight of his legacy. Billy Corgan produced, mixing alternative rock with electronic, progressive and synthpop touches. Reviews were mostly favourable, particularly for the variety of sound and the way the staggered release made such a big project easier to take in. It was also Jeff Schroeder's last studio album with the band.
