MACHINA/the machines of God
Machina/the machines of God is the fifth studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins, released in February 2000 on Virgin. A concept album, it brought drummer Jimmy Chamberlin back into the band and was meant to be their last official record before their first split later that year. It follows Adore, whose electronic and industrial touches it carries forward.
The reception was divided. Fans were again unsettled by the band's direction, and the record did not return them to the chart-topping heights they had known. Live, though, it was a different story. With Chamberlin and former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur in the line-up, the band toured internationally for longer than they had for Adore, and on stage the songs leaned back towards guitar-driven hard rock. A sequel, Machina II/the friends and enemies of modern music, followed later that year, released independently online.
