Hole
Hole were an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1989 by singer and guitarist Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson. The line-up around them shifted often, with drummer Patty Schemel and bassists Kristen Pfaff and Melissa Auf der Maur the best-known names. Rooted in the city's punk scene, they moved through grunge, noise rock and power pop, and Love's lyrics confronted body image, abuse and sexual exploitation with unusual bluntness.
Pretty on the Inside arrived in 1991, produced by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. Live Through This followed in 1994, blending punk, grunge and pop, and went platinum within a year. Celebrity Skin (1998) took a glossier, more commercial turn and sold around 2 million copies worldwide. The band split in 2002, and Love revived the name in 2010 for Nobody's Daughter, before retiring it in 2013.
