Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots are an American rock band formed in San Diego in 1989. Scott Weiland (vocals), Eric Kretz (drums) and brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass) made up the line-up until 2013. They began as Swing, then Mighty Joe Young, before signing to Atlantic Records and taking their current name. Their 1992 debut, Core, was a major hit and helped bring grunge to a wide audience.
The sound didn't stay put. Purple, Tiny Music… Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop and No. 4 sit alongside Core as the records most people return to, and over the years the band wandered into psychedelic rock, bossa nova and country. They split in 2003, reunited in 2008, and later worked with Chester Bennington before Jeff Gutt became their singer in 2017. Two albums with Gutt followed: a second self-titled record in 2018 and Perdida in 2020.
