Stone Temple Pilots' self-titled sixth album came out on 21 May 2010. It was their first record since Shangri-La Dee Da in 2001, and it grew out of the band's 2008 reunion tour. A lawsuit from Atlantic Records that summer left its future in doubt, but the label withdrew it, and the band went on to record at three studios at once, including Robert DeLeo's home setup and Eric Kretz's Bomb Shelter Studios. Scott Weiland tracked his vocals at his own Lavish Studios, with Don Was helping keep the sessions in step.

Robert and Dean DeLeo produced it themselves, against the label's wishes. Critics generally liked the results and heard a strong pull from 1960s and 1970s country and rock, which the band confirmed, naming Bob Dylan and Speedy West among their influences. "Between the Lines" was the lead single, and the album reached number two on the Billboard 200. It was the last with the full original line-up and their last for Atlantic.
