Album
Purple
Purple is the second album by Stone Temple Pilots, released on 7 June 1994 on Atlantic. The band began work on it while touring their debut, Core (1992). Most of it was recorded in March 1994, though "Big Empty" had been put down the previous May and turned up in the film The Crow.
Where Core stayed close to the group's grunge roots, this record roams further, taking in psychedelic rock, blues rock and even country. It went straight to number 1 on the Billboard 200, staying there for three weeks, and gave them chart-toppers on the Mainstream Rock Tracks list with "Vasoline" and "Interstate Love Song". Reviews at the time were mixed to negative, but opinion has shifted, and many now rank it among the best albums of the decade. It has since been certified 6× Platinum in the US. It's well worth hearing for the sheer range the band packs in.
