Vitalogy is Pearl Jam's third studio album, released on 22 November 1994. The band wrote and recorded it while touring behind Vs., and it marked a turn away from what had come before. Experimental pieces sit alongside subdued ballads and punk-edged hard rock, drawing on a wider range of influences than the earlier records. It was also the last album to feature drummer Dave Abbruzzese, who was dismissed before recording wrapped up. Session players stepped in, and Jack Irons, formerly of Red Hot Chili Peppers, finished the sessions.

The release was staggered: vinyl came first, with CD and cassette following on 6 December. The LP sold 34,000 copies in its opening week, a vinyl record for the SoundScan era until Jack White's Lazaretto in 2014. The CD then sold 877,000 in its first week, and the album went on to reach five-times platinum in the US. Critics were warm, and it is the sound of a successful band choosing to stretch itself.
