Binaural
Binaural is Pearl Jam's sixth studio album, released on 16 May 2000 through Epic. It came after the long tour for Yield, followed by a short break, with the band regrouping near the end of 1999. Making it wasn't smooth: Eddie Vedder struggled with writer's block, and Mike McCready entered rehabilitation for an addiction to prescription drugs. It is also the first Pearl Jam record to feature drummer Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, who had replaced Jack Irons during the Yield tour.
The band pushed in a more experimental direction here, using binaural recording techniques on some songs. The mood is atmospheric, and the lyrics are mostly sombre, with a strand of social criticism that the nebula imagery in the artwork reflects. Reviews were positive and it entered the Billboard 200 at number two. It went gold in the US, though it was the first of their studio albums not to reach platinum. The tour that followed produced a large run of official bootleg releases.
