Album
Core
Core is the debut album from Stone Temple Pilots, released on 29 September 1992 through Atlantic. Brendan O'Brien produced it, and it opened a run of studio records that stretches from this first outing to Perdida in 2020. Its sound sits where grunge, alternative rock and hard rock meet.
It was a huge seller, climbing to number three on the Billboard 200 by July 1993 and earning eight times Platinum certification in the US. "Sex Type Thing", "Plush" and "Creep" were the singles, with "Plush" topping the Album Rock Tracks chart and winning a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance, plus an MTV award for Best New Artist. Critics were cool at first, with comparisons to Pearl Jam common, but time has been kinder, and Core is now regarded as a seminal early-nineties alternative record. It remains the band's biggest success, and a 25th anniversary deluxe edition appeared in 2017.
