Vile is Cannibal Corpse's fifth studio album, released on 21 May 1996 through Metal Blade Records. It was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, with Scott Burns producing for the last time. The sessions were turbulent: original vocalist Chris Barnes was dismissed partway through and replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of Monstrosity, who has said he wasn't sure the job was his until the record was finished. It was also guitarist Rob Barrett's last album until Kill in 2006.

Musically, it steps away from the groove that shaped The Bleeding and leans towards a more brutal death metal attack. The sleeve art and song titles are tamer than on earlier releases, though the lyrics take in psychological horror as well as graphic violence. It became the band's first record to chart on the US Billboard 200, reaching number 151, and it is the place to hear Fisher's debut with the band.
