Melvins
Melvins formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, and have been going ever since. Vocalist and guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover have been the only constant members since 1984. The band is usually a trio, though it has also worked as a quartet, with either two drummers or two bassists. They are widely credited as pioneers of sludge metal and as a key influence on grunge and alternative metal.
Their sound sets heavy, slow riffs against restless, eclectic songwriting, drawing on stoner metal, drone and experimental rock. Few bands have been as prolific, with well over 25 studio albums since Gluey Porch Treatments in 1987. The records fans return to most are Houdini, Stoner Witch, Bullhead and Ozma, which make a good way in. Listeners who enjoy Kyuss, Primus or Faith No More will find plenty to like.
