Album
Prick
Prick is the sixth studio album by the Melvins, released on 5 August 1994 through Amphetamine Reptile Records. It appeared under the name ƧИIV⅃ƎM, the band's name in mirror writing. The usual explanation is that the group already had a contract with Atlantic Records, so a straightforward Melvins credit was off the table.
It sits in a busy stretch of the band's career. It follows Houdini from 1993 and shares its year with Stoner Witch, so 1994 gave listeners two very different Melvins records. Classed as experimental rock, Prick is the odd one out in that run, released on an independent label under a reversed name. For anyone tracing how the band operated in the mid-1990s, it is a revealing stop.
