Hostile Ambient Takeover
Hostile Ambient Takeover is the fourteenth studio album by the Melvins, released in April 2002 on Ipecac Recordings. It arrived a year after Electroretard and two years before Pigs of the Roman Empire, in a stretch when the band were putting records out at a remarkable rate. The band's blend of heavy metal, noise rock and experimental rock is all over it, in keeping with their long habit of refusing to settle into one groove.
The release has a neat collector's angle too. Each song also came out as a limited 7" single, pressed in just 2,500 copies, with exclusive B-sides that were mostly covers. The one exception was "The Anti-Vermin Seed", which was split across both sides of its single. For anyone tracing the Melvins' story through the early 2000s, it is a good place to stop and listen.
