Freak Puke
Freak Puke is a sludge metal album from the Melvins, released on 5 June 2012 through Ipecac Recordings. It came out under the name Melvins Lite, one of the band's alternate line-ups, and it was the first record to feature Trevor Dunn playing standup bass.
That change of instrument is what sets it apart. The Melvins had been making albums since Gluey Porch Treatments in 1987, and Freak Puke arrived between The Bride Screamed Murder and Everybody Loves Sausages. Swapping the usual electric bass for something upright and acoustic gives a band known for heaviness a different footing. If you know the Melvins mainly through their louder, denser records, this is a good one for hearing how far they will bend their own sound.
