Album
Deep Purple in Rock
Deep Purple in Rock is the fourth studio album by the English band Deep Purple, released on 5 June 1970. It was the first studio record from the Mark II line-up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, and it marked a decisive turn towards something louder and heavier.
Work began shortly after Gillan and Glover joined in June 1969, with rehearsals at Hanwell Community Centre. The aim was to capture the force of the band's live show, and the songs were shaped between bouts of heavy touring, with recording done at various London studios. It became their breakthrough in Europe, reaching No. 4 in the UK and staying on the chart for over a year, while the single "Black Night" climbed to No. 2. America was less welcoming. Today it is valued as a key early statement of hard rock and heavy metal.
