24 Carat Purple
24 Carat Purple is a Deep Purple compilation, and the first of their greatest-hits collections to come out worldwide on the band's own label. It was the third in what became a long line of such releases, and it appeared on Warner Bros. Records in 1975.
The curiosity here is the live version of "Black Night", recorded in Japan in 1972. It had previously turned up only as the B-side of "Woman From Tokyo", so this was its first appearance on an LP. For fans who never tracked down the single, that alone made the collection worth a look. It also arrived in the same year as Come Taste the Band, in a period when the group's hard rock and heavy metal reputation was already well established.
