Album
Bananas
Bananas is Deep Purple's seventeenth studio album, and it marks a real turning point: it's the first to feature Don Airey on organ and keyboards, taking over from founding member Jon Lord. Following Abandon in 1998, it arrived in August 2003 on EMI, with a US release through Sanctuary Records that October.
For anyone who grew up with the band's classic sound, the Hammond-driven heart of Purple is the thing to listen for here. Hearing how Airey fills a chair so closely tied to the group's identity is reason enough to press play, and it sets the stage for Rapture of the Deep in 2005. It's a hard rock record from a band in transition, and a useful marker in the story of the later years.
