Album
Burn
Burn, released on 15 February 1974, is Deep Purple's eighth studio album and the first with David Coverdale on vocals. It also introduced Glenn Hughes, who arrived from Trapeze to share bass and vocal duties alongside Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. This line-up is known as Mark III.
For the most part it sticks to the hard rock and blues of its predecessors, Machine Head especially, but a streak of funk rock creeps in, one that would grow stronger on the later records of the Mark III and IV years. Reactions were mixed at first, though reviews have since turned favourable. It reached number three in the UK and number nine in the US, and charted in 13 countries. A successful tour followed, but tensions surfaced while the band made its follow-up, and Blackmore left in early 1975. A reissue arrived in 2004.
