Slaves and Masters
Slaves and Masters is Deep Purple's thirteenth studio album, released in October 1990. It is the only record to feature Joe Lynn Turner on lead vocals. He joined the previous year after Ian Gillan was fired, and the band had also auditioned Jimi Jamison, who was unavailable because of other commitments. The sound sits in hard rock with a pop rock sheen.
It reached No. 87 on the US Billboard 200, well short of its predecessor The House of Blue Light, which got to No. 34. The 1991 tour did better, particularly in Europe. Turner was still in the band when work began on a follow-up in 1992, but managers eyeing a 25th anniversary tour pushed the group to bring back the Mark II line-up for The Battle Rages On… in 1993. That makes this a one-off chapter in the band's story, and a curiosity for anyone tracing the Turner years.
