Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple
Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple is a compilation from the English hard rock band, released on 4 July 1980 on Harvest. It gathers the group's original hits from the years before their 1984 reunion, so it works as a tidy tour of the earlier line-ups. A TV advertising campaign helped it become their third UK No. 1 album.
It is worth hearing as a way in, and it has a few curiosities. Because the vinyl ran past an hour, the volume was lowered and the EQ adjusted so both sides would fit. It was also the first North American release of "Demon's Eye", which had been swapped out for "Strange Kind of Woman" on the American edition of Fireball. A CD followed in 1984, and a 30th Anniversary Edition in 2010 added four tracks and a DVD with Jon Lord's commentary.
