Purple Passages
Purple Passages is a double-LP compilation that Deep Purple's label put out in 1972, available only in North America, Venezuela and Japan. It gathers material from 1968 and 1969, recorded by the band's Mark I line-up for the Tetragrammaton label, and it includes favourites such as "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman". Japan later got it on compact disc in 1993.
It arrived just as the band's heavier sound was taking over, so it works as a look back at the earlier days with Rod Evans on vocals, before he went on to front Captain Beyond. There are some alternate mixes here too: "The Bird Has Flown" opens with a clean intro rather than a fade-in, and "Why Didn't Rosemary?" is also a different mix. "Emmaretta", the last Mark I single, makes its first appearance on LP. Worth hearing for those early oddities.
